1997 Geo Prism 1.6 liter w/ 143k on it. when I bought the car it had an exhaust leak between the mainifold and the pipe. I thought it was just because one of the studs was stripped out, so I replaced it and the donut, the leak is still there (I made sure the bolts were super tight). I'm assuming that now the next step is to take the mainfold and/or pipe section in and get them surfaced? Is there anything else it could be? The leak is coming from the front of the joint, is it possible that the pipe is "pulling back" on it, making a gap? Thanks, Ian

I wouldn't make any decisions until I positively identified the leak. Use a piece of vacuum hose and hold one end to your ear and move the other end around until you locate the leak. You very possibly could have a cracked manifold. It's pretty common. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I'm confident it is a leak at the joint/union where the exhaust pipe meets up with the exhaust manifold.

Grab the pipe from the bottom and push up and down to see if it has any movement at all. If it has movement, then the joint is not sealing. If you have a doubt, then take it apart and inspect it. Your asking us what could be wrong and we are telling you what is most likely the problem. You appear to be convinced you already know so just take it apart and fix it.
