Our 1996 Ford Escort with about 80,000 miles idles rough when it is warmed up. But when you turn on the AC, it stops rough idle and idles normally... what is the problem?

Could be a couple things but sounds like the base idle speed is too low. When you ask for A/C the idle gets set higher to cover the load and not stall. Try just gently touching the gas when it seems rough to raise the idle just a bit and if it goes away the problem may be just an adjustment there or possibly a small vacuum leak that behave better with a little load. Any codes?

No codes or engine lights of any kind. Tapping on the gas a bit does not seem to help although taking it out of gear into neutral seems to help just a bit. Car drives fine on highway and around town otherwise.... it is just that idle problem that is so annoying!
