Engine will not start- Loud clanking noise Sign In

I have a 1981 chevy el camino that I purchased roughly 6 months ago. The car was rebuilt with a 5.7L 350 small block that they put in. The engine has had its minor problems here and there all of them being relatively simple to diagnose and fix but as of yesterday when it was taken on a 2 hour drive it unexpectedly stalled and would not restart. On occasion it has been known to stall but you can always get it to start immediately back up. The thing that makes this time different than the others is that when I went to start it back up there was what sounded like a large clanking noise accompanying the normal ignition sound as if metal was being grinded. I opened up the engine compartment and had a friend of mine turn the ignition to see if I could see where the problem was immediately, but had no luck. We tried this only 4 times to try to identify it yet not cause any more problems. Each time the belts moved 2-6 rotations then stopped abruptly each time they were accompanied by this loud metal noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is currently sitting in the field of my farm 2 hours away, if possibly i was hoping I could fix it fast there instead of having to put it on a trailer and and haul it back home.

Is there anyway you could record the noise and post it on a video hosting site and paste the link in here?

If it is cranking and then stopping, could be a starter drive or flywheel issue or even something mechanical in the engine. You could remove the belts, to see if it is an accessory problem. Whatever it is from your description, doesn't sound too good. You may need to get it towed back to your farm, so you can check it out.
