Engine stalls on deceleration.

My '88 Jeep Comanche engine dies frequently when I decelerate, or otherwise allow it to drop from high revs to idle quickly. If I play with the gas pedal a little it will sputter a bit and then start idling properly. This problem started recently. It never had a problem before and then in just a few days it turned into an almost constant problem. It drives fine, and only has the problem when I take my foot off the gas pedal It winds down to a stop unless I play with the pedal. If It stops I am usually still moving so I pop the clutch and it usually revs up rather high for a couple seconds and then drops down to a normal idle. I already replaced the Fuel filter and that didn't help. Also the emissions are great. ( the poor inspector had to fool around with it to get the test done) Any advice from someone who knows what I am talking about would be greatly appreciated. Josh

Without a code for this it will be tricky. A TPS or the idle speed motor could do this. The TPS would usually set off a code but might not so that's crap shoot. You can watch the idle speed motor work. Even in 1988 cars got their instructions on how to behave from many other items which tell each other what to do which is why so many mechanics are bald!! :-) T
