Engine stalls after restart Sign In

When I have been driving for a while, usually over 30 minutes, if I stop my car (2002 buick rendezvous) for a minute to run into the store, pick up mail, etc, it stalls when I turn it back on. The engine turns and it seems fine for a moment, then when I switch into gear, the car jerks a little, then check engine comes on and I can't do anything. Brakes, power steering, etc go out. This does not happen all the time. Last time it happened, I had switched to reverse to get out of a space, didn't touch the gas line, but the engine shook, then stalled. I rolled backwards, in neutral and drive, I still rolled backwards. After I let the car sit for about 1 hour, it is fine.

If it stalls the PS and all that and lights will come on and it will roll in drive. CEL? Does that come on when it runs fine?

When you have to wait for it to cool down what does it do? Does it crank but not start or no cranking at all?

I lose power steering and the brakes are very hard to push when it stalls. The check engine light only comes on when it is stalled. It will crank, but won't start when stalled. Pumping gas into it when stalled (which every guy that has tried to help me during a stall does) just makes it take longer to be able to start again.

The PS and lights are normal. Just put your key in "run" position without starting and that would happen. Lights are back to a bulb check mode. Brakes with engine not running don't have power assist but will give you one or two more after a stall with assist then quit assisting. There is a vacuum reservoir for that or if they are hydralically assisted they still store some power without the engine running.

If that vacuum booster has a problem and leaks bad it will cause the stall and the brake pedal would be hard right away. If so that's a clue that, that is the problem. If you think that could be it, plug off the source of vacuum to the booster as a test and see if the engine behaves. Don't forget if you do test it that way your ability to stop the car is not easy at all. Just test that while stationery. That could be it,
