Engine runs better with vehicle heater on Sign In

My 1997 Toyota Corolla ( yes it's quite vintage -_- ) has been running good all these years, partly because I'm not a frequent driver (just local grocery shopping etc. ), the odometer only reads 130,000 km currently.

However, recently while making a few long distance trips, I noticed that whenever I turned on the vehicle heater ( not AC, just the heat fan ), the engine runs much smoother and gives more power, resulting in a speed boost from 90 km/h to around 105.

Now, this wouldn't bother me in the cold season, I could definitely appreciate some warmth, but in hot summer times it's really unbearable to keep the heat on.

So does anyone have a speculation to why the engine acts so? I was thinking the thermometer controlling the gas and air intake may be off, or a coolant issue... Please shed some light on this, thanks guys!

There is just no correlation between those two things.

Your first step should be to have the codes reads to see if they give you a starting point.
