Engine restart when hot Sign In

1989 Ford F150 Pickup, in-line 6, 160,000 miles. Engine will not restart after driving and warmig up. Must wait 15 to 20 min to cool down. Less time if I open the hood. Runs well when running. I think it is fuel as it sputters at first when it tries to restart. Only happens in the Summer when it is hot (85+ degrees). I am not sure if the fuel injection cooling fan is running. I don't hear it anymore after I shut engine down. Where is the fan located.? I know there is a relay in the circuit.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

They had a lot of trouble with the Ignition Control Modules, mounted on the fender well causing problems like that.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

Thanks for the suggestion. I am thinking it may be the fuel injection blower not working. I can not tell now as it is not hot enough to cause the problem. I don't remember hearing the blower run as it used to. I have verified that the blower works but I can not find the relay as shown in the wiring diagram. Where is it???

Fuel injection blower?

I think you're inventing new parts

DUH!!! Mounted on the right side of the engine. Relay is controlled by eng temp and timer combined in a single relay unit. I have hot wired the blower and checked the fuse. Both good. Can not locate the relay.

Fuel injection blower?
Relay controlled by timer?
Are you sure you're not working on an F15?

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

the blower thing is new to me and i have been working on cars for 15 years.

i am with hammer it is most likely the control module. when it wont start spray some brakleen on the module this helps cool it down faster then try to start it. i have used this trick a lot with crank sensors on GM cars and it works good. worth a try.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

Thanks for the tip. No one else seems to be famliar with the blower but it is there . It has a flex duct running to the fuel inj. I still have the feeling it is a seperate relay baesd on how it is displayed in my Chilton manual. The fuse panel has it labeled as "After shut down blower".

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

I have to stand corrected here.

I did a little research and found there is a circuit designed for that. Here's what I could find on the system but i really don't think it has anything to do with your problem.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

Great Pics. More detail than my manual however it still does not show the relay. You may be correct as to it not having anything to do with my problem. It has not shown up this Winter. Just wait until Summer hits. The reason I am leaning toward fuel is that it will stutter when first trying to start then just turns over after that. May shotgun the ignition module however..only about $40.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

The Injector Blower Relay is located behind the Instrument Panel near the fuse panel.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

Just want to give you an undate. Thanks to your help and diagram, I was able to determine that the trouble is due to a faulty temp switch. Still can not find the relay but who cares. Thanks again Now I have to find someone who can sell me the part. NAPA, Ford.com and others have no idea what I am talking about. I will have to take the truck to a dealer parts guy and show him the part.

Re: Engine restart when hot Sign In

I FOUND THE PROBLEM....After rebuilding the ignition system and still having the problem, I turned to fuel. It turn out to be the relay that provides voltage to the fuel pumps. Relay drops out when hot. All solved with a $20 part.
