Engine ran out of Oil!

Hi ppl, wondering if anybody can advise me on the following: The other day my 2001 vauxaul vectra (diesel) died out on me as I was driving because it ran way too low on oil because I hadn't topped it up in a while. The engine started again once I topped up the oil but is there a chance that the engine might not last very long if it has been damaged? Any ideas how long it would last for now? All comments welcome Thanks in advance

The fact that it died out from lack of oil makes damage about a certaintly. You might just get away with it for a while using the best synthetic oil and use a heavier grade. 15-40 or so. The higher the #s the thicker the oil. The low # counts the most with this, T
