Engine overheat on idle, fine when driving

Ok I'm a girly girl and really don't know much about cars, yesterday I got stuck in peak hour traffic and my car kept overheating (when I say this I mean the temp kept going into the red bit) when this happened i just turned my car off as I was scared it would kill my car and I really cant afford a new one anytime soon and would love to avoid a trip to the mechanic to avoid costs!! When I started driving though, no matter how slowly, even if I was just rolling it would start to cool down and the further I went the cooler it would get. I got home and noticed my car was low on oil and coolant so topped both of them up and went for a drive later in the night. I still had the same issue, was wondering if anyone could explain this in English (non car jibberish) to me please! :) would love to know i there is an easy fix to this situation!
Hyundai Lantra 1996, Engine is 1.8Lt, done approx 265000kms, btw I don't know if this makes any difference at all but I'm in Australia

You car requires some in depth testing and since you are a self proclaimed "girly girl", you don't have much choice but to pay a shop to do it for you. You don't have the tools nor ability to do this yourself. Do not drive this any more, not even to get to the shop. Have it towed.

Driving it hot could cost you an engine. With HT here, cheaper to get it towed than blow an engine which would then still need to be towed.

I realise that! I said I was a girly girl not stupid! I got one of my machines to come and have a look at my car in my driveway, he couldn't see any obvious causes and then took it for a drive. The issue was it was serverly low on oil and coolant and it just needed time to settle in. Today I have sat waiting in traffic for 10 min without moving and the temp gauge didn't move at all! My baby is back to normal but I appreciate your input!

You haven't fixed anything yet. All you did is kick the can down the road. You have a leak and that has to be found.
