Engine oil choice Sign In

It is close to time to change my oil, with winter coming on and my 1998 Ford Taurus se stationwagon with 129000 on it and a misfire in the first cylinder, what would be the best choice oil wise to help it through the cold winter months.

Your car has a burnt valve. The oil or any additives will make no difference whatsoever in the misfire situation.Continue to use the same all you always did. I think that car uses 5W30.

I just wasn't sure with an engine this old if I should go with those oils made for older engines or if since in the winter a thinner oil might help more?

Re: Engine oil choice Sign In

Hello Indy. I have followed your dilemma on 4 or 5 forums. I think what everyone is trying to tell you is with an engine in the shape yours is in, it really won't make any difference in the weight of oil you use. If you use thinner oil, it will burn it faster and cause problems if the oil is not checked really often.. If you use thicker oil, it will be hard on the engine tring to start and could cause the engine to destroy itself sooner. So use whatever oil you have been using and start looking for an engine or possibly another vehicle for the future. Good luck with the car. Hope it makes it through the winter for you.
