I have a 68 Mustang with a 302c.i. engine and a Holley 4bbl. carburetor. In the past, the engine would run a little rough, and when I'd step on it, once it got up a few r's, it would spit and sputter like crazy. Then, after that, the idle was so rough it would barely run. Yesterday, I installed a Pertronix electronic ignition in the distributor to see if that would help. I also noticed the vacuum advance module was not attached with factory screws, but aftermarkets with square nuts. Upon installing the distributor, the car started and idled fine, very nice actually. When I took to the road, as long as I feathered the gas, it was ok. But when I stomped it, the same thing happened and it missed like crazy. But now, the idle wasn't affected hardly at all. I am suspecting the vacuum advance unit and perhaps, the power valve in the carb, since Holley's were notorious for that problem. I can get a vacuum advance unit for about $30, but an entire distributor with the vaccuum advance included is only $60. I'm thinking, just go with the distributor next, and if that doesn't help, on to the carburetor. Anyone with suggestions would be appreciated.

OE distributor with points and vacuum advance was just fine. alterations just confuse the show. Carb may need work. Is this a direct replacement for the car? Have you ruled out plugs, wires, cap and rotor? Coil tower?
