Engine makes screeching sounds on startup

I didn't see any topics on this and I wanted to see if anyone knew what was wrong with my car before I took it to an auto shop. First, here's the specs on my car: Year: 1991 Make: Chevrolet Model Cavalier RS Engine & Transmission: 2.2 4-Cylinder Automatic Mileage: 174,827 I've owned the car for about 2 years now and this has never happened to me before. I replaced the wheels, brakes, and the starter all within the past year, more or less. Recently, when I try to start my car the engine makes a screeching sound; kind of like the noise it makes when the car is already started and someone tries to start it when it's already on. At first, my dad and grandfather told me that it could be that the starter was just hitting a dead spot and that I should either roll the car forward a few feet or just pull the belt a couple of inches and try starting it then. When I pulled the belt and tried starting it it works just fine, but it's just annoying and an inconvenience to do this at least once a day now. I told my dad and he said it's probably the starter or the flywheel. Now, I just recently replaced the starter so I'm thinking it's most likely the flywheel. I'm not a big car person so I don't know much about them except for the basics and a little more. Someone else mentioned to me that it might be the flywheel as well so that might be it. I'm just looking for some clarification and what recommendations I should do about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Danny

If turning the engine a bit by hand as you said works to stop this it's probably worn or broken teeth on the ring gear (flywheel) not the starter's gear. However if the starter was just put in take a look in there as it might not set quite close enough and perhaps a shim if used could be removed. If no damage is seen to ring gear then if this just began with the new starter it might not be quite right. Replacing that ring gear is a big deal and best avoided if possible. Check out that starter soon and see if it's the problem before the ring gear is if not already, T

Could just be as simple as a belt problem too. If you said it doesn't do it after you pull the belt a little bit, try replacing the belt totally. It's a pain, but fairly cheap.
