Engine hesitation - 2008 Ford Escape Sign In

Brought my 08 Ford Escape for inspection last week and everything was fine. Since I got it back I've been having problems with engine hesitation when accelerating from a stop or low speed. I'll step on the gas and it will jerk forward a second later, like I'm revving it in neutral and throwing it into drive.

What could be the problem here? From reading a few troubleshooting guides I can rule out many of the possibilities, like clogged air/fuel filters. Both were replaced during the inspection, along with an oil change. Is it possible that one of these components was improperly installed?

Also, is it likely that this problem was caused by the mechanic, or is it just a coincidence?
