Engine cuts off with original air filter

I have a 2006 husquvarna 23 hp briggs & stratton engine that will not run with the filter that is supposed to be on it i have to use an oversized K&n air filter some thing is not right with the gas and air mixture and i have no idea what it is.

Not a small engine expert but i can share what i have ran across with B & S engines
I do know that if the Air filter gets any kinda dirty ,then engine will run richer and foul the spark plug.
I assume you have tried a new /clean filter in it with an oiled prefilter.
Another common thing I find is the carburetor base gaskets fail.
Take the carburetor off and inspect the base gasket...clean the carburetor as well.
May even be a faulty Carburetor..
