Engine cranks wont start Sign In

hello

my situation is a bit different than the other thread with the same title.

my well running 05 frontier at ~30k turns but wont start.

details:
truck has not been turned on in four months.
battery at 1.5 volts.
turn ignition nothing happens. expected with dead battery.
hooked up a battery booster that is fully charged.
now engine lights come on and engine turns. wont start. tried 3x.
dash shows fuel.
dash shows battery light.
dash shows oil empty.
engine oil stick shows oil at normal levels. has a slight strange smell though, like the smell from vintage cars with thick exhaust. very minor though -- had to stick my nose close to stick.

during the idle months the battery leaked a bit because i did not detach the battery. the tray caught the fluid so the leak was not excessive. i cleaned it up and scrubbed the connectors and posts. the fluid levels were down inside the battery so i added about a pint of distilled water.

could my engine not be starting with the booster because of an issue with the battery?

any tips?

thank you so much for your time

*edit*
the weather is warm. when the booster is connected strange pulsing noises come from the engine when i turn the key to make the lights come on. when the booster is disconnected a similar strange noise occurs again from the engine. is this the fuel pump? (strange to me is any noise from a truck. i am not a auto person ;)

I would try replacing the battery first. If it only had 1.5 volts, it is more than likely dead beyond recovery. Let us know what happens with a good battery installed. If the battery leaked the acid out of it, there has to be a small crack somewhere to allow the liquid to escape.

I concurr. If the battery is dead, and not a deep cycle battery (made to go flat and recharge -for marine applications) charging it will do very little. you're up for a new battery.

ok.
the leak came from the positive terminal i believe. anyway, the truck battery was at 1.5 volts. with the auto booster attached the battery reads 12.7 volts. i will leave the booster "on" and attached to the battery while plugged into the wall outlet to see if that charges the truck battery (the engine is also attached to the battery). i assume if the battery increases in volts from it being charged after a few hours then the battery is good and can be further charged up. stating that a crack caused the leak a few months ago has be concerned, however. maybe i will just go to a store and buy a new battery tonight.

Not just maybe - toss this battery. It was down on electrolite, leaks and dropped to 1.5v -- it's probably orig and could even be made in 2004 on this. That's enough alone.

Even a crack with batteries that you can add water to shouldn't lower them all a pints worth so when it's running you'll probably find it overcharges or already burned out the alternator and won't charge at all now,

T

Re: Engine cranks wont start Sign In

ok, i will get a new battery.

i would like to state that although the booster/charger put 5-6volts back into the battery, the multimeter, connected only to the battery would read the volts from the battery fluctuating wildly from 0-6volts, then back down again. i dont think that is a good sign. however, it could just be dirty connectors that caused that.

whatever. i will get a new battery and let you know what happens!

i am new to auto repair (ya, changing a battery is repair to me ;) so i am finding this quite a fun learning experience!
