The engine and transmission are both bad and need to be replaced. The junk yard reference says only a 1996 -1997 2.5l will replace it. However looking at the 1998-2000 it looks exactly the same. Why won't the 1998-2000 work, or is it just a minor adaption? Some are on the flexplate, some on the camshaft. BTDT. I would think that you could, but that's a big THINK. Probably should try to find an exact match rather than the possiblity of losing all of your hair if it doesn't work. (I have no hair left to share).
