Engine compatability Sign In

I have a 1996 Chrysler Sebring Convertible JXI with the 2.5l and has 180,000. The engine and transmission are both bad and need to be replaced. The junk yard reference says only a 1996 -1997 2.5l will replace it. However looking at the 1998-2000 it looks exactly the same. Why won't the 1998-2000 work, or is it just a minor adaption?

gemmons; Not sure about the transmissions, but the reluctor wheel for the crank sensor can (and probably are) different. Some are on the flexplate, some on the camshaft. BTDT.

Can't the flex plate on the 19998-2000 be changed with the one from the 1996-1997? Any other possible conflicts?

gemmons; Ya got me on that one. I would think that you could, but that's a big THINK. Probably should try to find an exact match rather than the possiblity of losing all of your hair if it doesn't work. (I have no hair left to share).
