Engine Started Loosing power and making a loud tapping sound Sign In

I have a 1999 GMC Sanoma, 5 speed, 2.2 (four cylinder) motor with 220,000 miles. Truck has been running great until this week. I was going up a hill and it seemed like it was losing power, I down shifted and it still felt really weak. Then it started squealing really bad and continued loosing power I kept driving, trying to make it home. It started making a loud tapping sound that continued to get worse, eventually it stalled out on me. I noticed the oil gage was at zero (previously the oil gauge would be around 40, but at an idol after the motor warmed up it would drop to 0, I never really worried about it, truck always ran fine). I checked the oil, it was about 1/2 a quart low, when I pulled the dipstick out a lot of white smoke came out. I let the truck sit for a while and was able to drive it home, It makes a really bad tapping sound that gets worse in higher rpms (the squealing sound stopped). Any advice about this problem would be GREAT!!!! I would like to try to fix it my self. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Apparently oil pressure is important on an engine with 220,000 miles. Start looking for a motor.

I couldn't count how many times I've heard this sentence. Almost always it was very bad news that followed..... Josh. No matter what the problem. Engine clanging, No pressure, Overheating you need to stop and tow the vehicle home or where ever. Unless you can verify without a doubt that it is safe to drive. More than likely HT is right. Continuing to drive with those kind of signs is turning a repairable problem in a major job...
