My car 01 Alero 2.4 L with 130k has been making a clicking/clanking/rattling sound. The sound is coming from the engine. The sound gets worse the higher the RPMS. It is not speed dependent. When accelerating, the RPMS do not climb as fast as they should. Today the sound got much worse. I conked out when sitting idling. The car has trouble staying idle without conking out. The noise has got much worse to the point where I don't drive it above 2000 rpms. It sounds like the engine is shot!

Sounds like you may have a bad timing chain. This engine is very notorious for wearing out the plastic chain guides which makes the chain very loose. Be VERY CAREFUL with this because if this chain jumps gears while the engine is running, it will bend all the valves and cost big bucks to fix. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
