Engine Light Question

I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna LE with about 38k miles on it. This afternoon, the check engine light came on. Of course the dealership wants $90 to diagnose the problem and them being a dealership, I'm sure they will find something wrong with the car which will cost a pretty penny to fix and probably won't fix the problem I came in for. I checked the gas cap which was on tightly and I popped the hood. I don't know how or why but the engine cap was off and all the way on the left side of the car. Unbelievable. The last time I had an oil change was back in February and we haven't been under the hood since so I don't know if the cap has been off this whole time. Can it really be as simple as a cap that isn't on right? Thanks in advance!

Check the oil NOW! Put the cap back on when known filled to proper level. If it behaves and has driven well for this time it still could have triggered the CEL or "Engine Light" - note how low if any the oil is and report that back. for that matter check all routine fluids that they are properly filled. If running well it may reset itself in a few days or so. If so forget it. Parts outlets will frequently do a code scan for no charge, not as comprehensive as some perhaps but I'd let them and report the findings first. If not running well it really needs tending to at once - still get proper cap and check/fill oil as necessary. We are talking the oil cap aren't we? If a cooling system or other cap put it on but let us know which one it was, T
