Engine Dies when Shifted into Drive or Reverse

1998 Cadillac Seville SLS 4.6 Northstar 116,000 mi. the Engine starts without a problem, but occasionally the Engine Dies when shifted into Drive, or Reverse. Also it Dies when slowing Down at a traffic light. Sometimes when this happens, but not everytime, i notice the Tachometer drops down to Zero while the Engine is still running. Any suggestion? Thanks
