Engine Cutting Off & Randomly Revving Sign In

Hi. I own a 95 Ford Escort, manual transmission, 179,000 miles. 4 cylinder, 1.9L engine. I've owned the car for 9 years, and it's been an extremely reliable vehicle. I've never had any problems with the 95 Escort, aside from routine maintenance. Today, I experienced some problems with the engine (I'm guessing it's the engine). Here's what happened:

1. While stopped at a redlight (in Neutral), the engine idles very low, starts shaking slightly, and then cuts off. I can sometimes prevent the engine from cutting-off by giving the car some gas (tapping the gas pedal, even though I'm stopped). Three times today, while stopped @ a redlight (in Neutral), the car randomly revved up to 2 RPM's, then 3 RPM's, then back down to 1.5 RPMs, started shaking, and then cut off.

2. It took me 3 tries to start the car this morning. The first 2 times it started, but then the engine idled very low, the car shook slightly and then cut-off. Giving the car extra gas (tapping the gas pedal, even though stopped) did the trick and allowed me to start the car. It was hard to keep the car from cutting off while backing up (in reverse).

3. While coasting in 2nd gear, the engine revved up to 3 RPM's, and then back down randomly -- I did not have my foot on the gas pedal.

What do you think the problem is?
