ECM question 96 neon stalls Sign In

96 Neon shuts down when the temp gets up, will not start again until it cools down. Tried pulling codes but none come up. Have changed the fuel pump, cam and crank sensors, and timing belt. Was told that the computer may be at fault when it heats up...does the computer need to be coded to the VIN on this year when replacing or can I just grab one from the wreckers? Any other ideas if this is not the problem?

Re: ECM question Sign In

You need the vin # to correctly flash the PCM...

Not that Chrysler doesn't have problems with their PCMs but it really seems like you may be jumping the gun a little, going off what you posted. When it dies you need to find out what you are losing. Spark or fuel? Then find the system causing the problem & diagnose the system............

Re: ECM question Sign In

Mikdonn, when the problem is occuring, do you have power and ground at the fuel pump, coils, and injectors? Also, have we verified spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse and compression? I have seen many a bad part right out of the box. When this happens, it can make even the best techs second-guess themselves. Let's double check all the basics before we move on.

mikdonn; This is going to sound 'way out there', but check the oil pressure sending unit. If it is leaking, check the connector at the PCM for oil.

Re: ECM question Sign In

Will have to check those further...not going to sink any more into a mechanic...previous repairs have cost enough for this year, and will have to venture this one on my own right now. It's my older car and I'm wanting to give it to my son when he turns 16. Any suggestions on where I could get info on carying out these tests on my own? Thanks Smile

Re: ECM question Sign In

2 quick check you can run while it won't start is get a spark tester from a parts store, take of one of the plug wires and see if has spark. If it has spark spray a little carb clean down the throttle to see the engine will run on that. If it does that would verify a fuel problem.

Depending on what you find out will tell you which way you need to be looking next
