Hey everyone,
I own a 1991 Dodge Shadow. About a month ago, the car would have great difficulty in starting. Every time I started the car, it would take more time to start, and then eventually, after about a week, it plain would not start. It sounded to me like a battery problem, so I jump started it and it and it started up fine. After the car is jump started, and I turn off the car while it is parked, the engine is either incredibly difficult to start or wont start again. Another jump start works though. I also find that if I charge up the alternator real well, the next time I go to start the car it starts up fine and I don't need a jump start. I figured It was a battery/alternator problem
So, I took the car to the mechanic. He told me that I had a blown headgasket, and that it would cost me close to 1500 dollars to repair (more than the vehicle is worth). My question is how does the jump start jump the car if the head gasket is blown? How does the alternator charge work? And finally, does it really take 1500 dollars to repair a headgasket from a car that is over 20 years old? I really, really, love this car and would absolutely hate to see it go. I am not really sure where to go with this problem- so any help would appreciated greatly! Thank you.
