Dodge Intrepid fuel pump

The check engine light is on and my gas gauge keeps acting screwy. I was told by the folks at Autozone it was the tank sending unit. I called around to a couple mechanics and they said that to fix it they'd probably have to replace the entire fuel pump. Is that correct? I was also quoted roughly $700+ for parts & labor for such a job. Is that an accurate quote? Thanks.

Part is replaced as one complete unit...
Part alone at Autozone is $255.00 + tax ...Expect a decent markup at a shop.
IMO $700.00 is a fair estimate at a Qualified repair shop.

I had a feeling $700 would be the quote I would get. The code that was given to me by the AutoZone clerk was P0463 "Fuel Level Sending Unit Condition."
Apart from the shotty gas gauge, there have been a few occassions when it would not start in the past. That may mean it is the entire fuel pump.
Oddly enough, when I drove the car the other day, the check engine light was not on anymore, but the gas gauge was still acting up. I am at my wits end with this car. Oil leaks, water pump, alternator, battery, valves, and of course the additional upkeep of oil changes and tires.
Is it worth it to even have the fuel pump replaced?

Maybe do yourself a favor and take it to a professional mechanic and have it diagnosed before replacing anything.
It'll be worth the diagnostic charge and then you can decide if its worth putting any more money into it.
Depending on the mileage and overall vehicle condition,you may just want to trade out if it.

I know this is an older post but if u r still having issues, some of the Dodge Intrepids actually have an access panel in the trunk to get to the fuel pump. Empty your trunk and pull the carpet back and see if yours has one. If so you can do it yourself very easily and save a ton of money!
