1998 Ford Taurus/1295000/6cylinder/3.0 OHV

This morning I needed to use my defrost and given the problem of the misfire with my engine, when I turned it on it really put a strain on my engine. Today I was talking with a co worker who suggested: "The strain may be from the AC compressor, which runs in the defrost mode. Try disconnecting the wire to the clutch on the comp and see if that helps." Does this sound right? If so how would I disconnect this on a 1998 Ford Taurus SE station wagon with a 3.0 OHV engine 6 cylinder. Would doing this help take some of the strain off the engine and provide me with defrost?

I assume that you ran the air during the summer. If so and the air came out of the proper vents at that time then its not the compressor thats causing your prob. If the vac got that low the system is designed to fail in the heat/defrost mode anyway. check for air flow switching to vent , floor ,defrost, regardless of temp. If so check your heater hoses at firewall ,both should be hot with eng warmed up. BTW why are you not fixing eng ,

Actually I never did, I tried it and it put out cold air but never needed it and it also put a strain on the engine. Everything runs but by running it the engine really strains due to the misfire. Fixing the engine is not economically viable. I have been told I am looking at a minimum of $1000 to repair with no guarentee it will run perfectly, so I am just driving it as is (the car is performing pretty well given it's condition) till it dies. I am not using the heater just the vent which is enough heat, I just need to use the defrost for a few minutes to get the ice off the windshield.

I kinda figured that was the reason,hope u win the lotto , then u could get eng fixed lol. But if you dont , here is some info on rhe defrost door actuator see if it moves when defrost is selected, if not see if hose has vac.If not and all hoses look ok it could be control head and that could run into $$. Try moving the actuator rod by hand. If you get defrost flow try to tie it in place for winter.Click on link for info. The defoster works, as does the heat and AC, the problem is the strain the defrost puts on the engine when I turn it on. I was told there is a fuse I can remove that will allow the defrost to work but will stop the ac compressor coming on which is what puts the strain on the engine.

If you don't want the compressor to come on, just unplug it.

I was told there is a fuse I can remove that will stop the compressor from coming on, unplugging it would also work but I have no clue where the compressor is located to unplug it. I did find the fuse listing and it listed 2 fuses that deal with the compressor clutch or something along those lines and was told that removing those two would disable the compressor.
