Hello all, looking for some diagnostic advice. Im helping to fix my daughters 2005 Ford escape with a 3.0 V6, and cylinder 1 is dead.

Some brief history on the issue. We bought it used at 150,000 miles and it's ran great for some 4 months. She told me it ran rough on her way to work one day, then fine on the way back, then wouldn't start. I was out of town for work, so she towed it to a shop for a diagnosis. They replaced two coils (cylinders 5 and 6) and all spark plugs. This got it running, but it now has a dead cylinder (1), and she said it feels the same as it did the day it ran rough.

What we've done...
1. Tested compression, was consistent with other cylinders. but noticed the spark plug in cylinder 1 was absolutely brand new still even after her driving it 40 or so miles, so I assume it's never fired.

2. Removed and tested all coils for resistance. These are two pin coils, all measured the same, so I ruled this out.

3. Tested the connectors that attach to the cylinder with a simple test light. I did this with none of them connected, just to isolate what I could. All connectors except cylinder 1 connector showed one pin on at all times with ignition on, and other only pulsed when we cranked. Cylinder 1 connector showed always on for both sides and no pulse when cranked. I'm kicking myself now for not testing voltages with multimeter now, but one pin was definitely lower voltage, as the light was a bit weaker, assuming this was the switching or signal wire.

I'm thinking it could be a pcm issue, but I've never had to diagnose anything like this before. I've read that a transistor on the pcm can fail with 2 pin coils systems, causing a dead cylinder. Any thoughts on how to pinpoint this issue?

Another weird issue...even after being driven 40ish miles with a dead cylinder, there is NO engine code or light. I'm far from a mechanic or technician, but this seems extremely odd to me. I'm wondering if there is a code, but the light on the dash wasn't disconnected by a shady pervious owner or dealer, and that is a separate issue. We found some jabky repairs on it already.

You are on the right track here.

There is a known problem with the Escape PCMs burning out final transistors.

You pretty much proved that when you found no pulse at the connector. The only thing you haven't tested is the wire from the PCM to the coil connector.

 If the Wiring checks out, Google and refer to TSB 05-11-1
HT is correct, most likely needs the PCM replaced as well as all the Coils and the correct Spark Plugs

If you could post a connector diagram for the PCM and show what pin has the control for cylinder #1 on it. Then he could back probe the wire and with the key on and there should be 12 volts there. If there isn't 12 volts then there's a bad connection In the wire somewhere.
If there is 12 volts on that wire, then you guys are right and it has a bad PCM.

I had to use a different image hosting site. Ours is down again.

OK, the wire you are looking for is on pin #1 of connector 175E. That would be the connector furthest to the passenger side of the car. The wire will be Lt green with a white tracer.
