Crank position sensor fix but not fix Sign In

2000
Chevy
C2500
5.7 Vortec
Ok... i have done a lot of research. first the truck would not start after a rain. i checked all the wires and dist cap. So i looked online. Everything that it was doing pointed in the direction
of the Crankshaft Position Sensor. So i replaced it. After a few turnovers it slugishly cranked and seemed to be running find when it was idle. So i took it around the block. About 3/10 of a mile it died. no spit no sputter. just dead and turning it over is no good. But it does not act like a timing problem anymore. it does not even act like it wants to start. just nothing.

Check for spark and take a fuel pressure reading......post your results...

Sounds like you created a new problem that you didn't have before.

So i checked the spark and i was not getting one from the pug or the coil. i bought a new coil and of course the ould one was pressed on so i didnt even worry about getting it off i just hooked the new one up and tried again and still no spark is that not the problem or does the coil pack have to have a good ground or what? oh i did try to ground it with a piece of speaker wire and still nothing.

The truck wouldn't start in the rain so you replaced the Crank Sensor and now it won't start at all. Sure sounds like you messed up the Crank sensor somehow.

The coil housing itself doesn't need to be grounded with a ground strap. The pink wire at the coil should have battery voltage with the key on. The other wire (believe is white) is used by the ICM to ground the coil. You can use a 12 volt test lamp connected to battery positive to see if the ICM is toggling the coil ground while cranking the engine. The test light will rapidly flash if the ICM is toggling the coil ground while cranking the engine.

I'd say you need to check your crank sensor output signal. You might be able to use a volt meter if you turn the crank really slow. Back probe the yellow wire at the crank sensor connector. You can also check at the computer connector C1 pin 30. It should toggle between 0 and 12 volts with the ignition on as you turn the crank. Make sure that you have the ignition coil unplugged while your turning the engine by hand.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: Crank position sensor fix but not fix Sign In

it did start and ran for 30 min at idle and i drove a ways and it just died. so it is not the crank sensor since it does not sound like a timing issue like last time. so if the coil does not need to be grounded i should check that first. there is a black component on the same bracket, not sure what it is called but i know it accepts the signal from the crank sensor, would it possibly be bad and not letting the coil send a spark?

The ignition timing is not adjustable at all on that vehicle.

I'm not trying to be mean here but just going off a few of your posts I can tell you are unfamilar with this system and to make it worse you are using flawed logic....

Your best & cheapest bet here is to listen to these guys and do the tests they are telling you to do.....If you don't understand something.....thats fine...just say so & they will elborate & post diagrams....

One other quick note......If this doesn't have fuel pressure as well as no spark........That a whole different road you want to be going down.....

Re: Crank position sensor fix but not fix Sign In

When you were working on this, did you turn the distributor in an attempt to change the timing? This isn't the 350 that used to be back in the day. This is a very different system and the old methods and rules will get you in trouble here.
