Cooling system of 1999 Deville Sign In

Hello all,

I have a 1999 Cadillac Deville with 142K miles on it. It is overheating, as many of the Northstar engines do in Cadillacs around this year it seems like. My best guess, blown head gasket. However, I've decided to change the thermostat (already did), change water pump (haven't done yet) and do a complete radiator flush before asking a seasoned mechanic to replace the head gasket(s) only for him or her to tell me to replace the motor (definitely not wanting to carry that monetary load). Anyhow, I went to begin the radiator flush by pulling out the plug on radiator. It seems all the fluid in the radiator came out, but nothing changed in the pressurized reservoir tank. Why is this? How do I drain the antifreeze/coolant from the pressurized reservoir tank? I keep repeating "pressurized reservoir tank" just to be sure that everyone understands that there isn't a separate access point or cap to the radiator, other than removing the hoses (or at least I couldn't locate it).

You all's assistance is much appreciated.

The head gasket problems in this engine go much deeper than just blown head gaskets. The engine has an aluminum block and they have a problem with the head bolts pulling the threads right out of the block. This is not a good candidate to try to repair. My best advise is get rid of it.

The surge tank should have emptied out when you drained the radiator. Must be some dex-sludge plugging up the plumbing.
