Compression Test and Blown Head Gasket on Honda Civic?
Hello Everyone. I am new to the forum. I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX with 1.7L engine. The car overheated probably due to a radiator problem (separate issue). I wanted to see if the head gasket was blown so I put in a compression tester and these are the results. But this is my first time running a compression test so I'm not sure because of the cylinders being not exactly the same pressure. I wanted your opinion on whether you think the head gasket is blown or a valve problem or something else??? DRY TEST Cylinder 1: 122 Cylinder 2: 140 Cylinder 3: 122 Cylinder 4: 150 WET TEST Cylinder 1: 165 Cylinder 2: 145 Cylinder 3: 150 Cylinder 4: 145 There are no other symptoms for a blown gasket. No water in the oil. No smoke. Just the car running hot (which there is absolutely a radiator problem and I am replacing the radiator).

Head gaskets don't usually show up with a compression test. You need to do a pressure and chemical test on the cooling system. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I wish I had the tools to do what you said but I do not. I only have a compression tester. What is the purpose of a compression test? I've read online that many people use it to diagnose a blown gasket (looking for 30% loss in compression in certain cylinders). Are these online mechanics wrong?

No, they are just overlooking the fact that is has to be severe to show up that way and that is not the commonly accepted test for a blown head gasket. If you're not equipped to handle the job, that pretty much means someone else has to do it. I would love to perform brain surgery but I don't have the training or the equipment to do that either.
