Chunk cracked off cylinder wall. Too severe for rebuild?

What you are looking at is the engine block of a 1989 Subaru Justy. It's a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder engine.
There is a chunk cracked out of one of the cylinder walls.
Who thinks that this is bad enough to make an engine rebuild a bad idea? Would I be unwise to simply put new pistons, rods, bearings and rings in this thing and give it a go?

The block is destroyed. It cannot even be machined at this point. Any more money put into it is waste. This is what we refer to as a catastrophic failure. That car lived a long life of good service, its time to send it off the the automotive retirement home which is the scrapyard.

I'm a bit new to this stuff (first engine removal and breakdown on my own) and I am not going to attempt to re use this block because I think it's too risky - but theoretically couldn't it work ok? I have watched the piston movement and that cracked off area is well outside of the rings and the actually compression area of the piston. I was thinking that theoretically I could take a dremel to that cracked off area, smooth it all out so it looks like a smooth like oval instead of a wound (so it's less likely to develop cracks) and rebuild it as is.
I understand and agree that this block is too risky to use. But theoretically, I think it could work.

I understand and agree that this block is too risky to use. But theoretically, I think it could work.
For about 5 minutes if that. Ask any machine shop. Your piston skirt would snag that in a heartbeat. Why do you think it broke off in the first place? Trust me, even in theory its a boat anchor.

you could always have it bored out and sleeved. don't know how much that would cost though.

Considering the age of the vehicle, unless there was some sentimental value or other factors attached to the car...I would weigh the repair costs to what it would cost you to get into something else....
