Chipmunk caught in belt; now no power steering Sign In

1999 Ford Taurus
Engine size: 2.0
68k miles

As soon as my car caught I heard a defined "CLUNK." I initially thought it was the vent opening/closing to the engine compartment, but, obviously that wasn't it b/c I found the little dead varment beneath the engine.

The car starts and runs just fine, but the power steering is gone. I have plenty of power steering fluid. After closely inspecting the belt I can see no cracks and there is not slack as if it were broken. The shaft is turning, but the pully is not.

Any suggestions as to what my issues can be?

Thank you,
LNolen

What does that mean? What shaft? What pulley?

The crank shaft is turning, it has to be for the engine to run, but the belt is not turning.

Then something is locked up. Remove the belt and see which pulley won't turn.

Could it be the harmonic balancer separated from the crank shaft?

I don't know. You just said it was turning. Is the whole pulley turning or not?

Re: Chipmunk caught in belt; now no power steering Sign In

The shaft is turning, but the pulley is not. I'm sorry for making this difficult. I am a girl, and I'm trying to research the issue so I can be a little better educated when I call/see a mechanic tomorrow. As I understand it the key could be stripped or the harmonic balancer could be broken away. If the harmonic balancer ring is broken will that result in a two-pieced pulley? Will the pulley's interior turn without the exterior turning?

If so, then I should be able to determine if it is the key or the harmonic balancer before seeing a mechanic, correct?

Re: Chipmunk caught in belt; now no power steering Sign In

The balancer is an inner hub and an outer ring joined by rubber. If the rubber separates, the center hub will turn with the engine and the outer part will not. If the hub itself is not turning, then you have serious crankshaft problems and damage.

Re: Chipmunk caught in belt; now no power steering Sign In

I seriously doubt that chipmunk was the sole cause of this. It had to be bad already.

One last question if you will. What is the range of cost for repair if it's the harmonic balancer?

Probably a couple hundred bucks average.
