Check Gauge Light on, engine louder, making questionable noises. Sign In

2005 Jeep Wrangler, 4.0L, 6 Cylinder, 5 Speed Automatic Trans.

These problems could be related, or unrelated. I am not sure. Also, it is winter.

Every time I turn my Wrangler on when the engine hasn't been on in a few hours/cool, the Oil Pressure Gauge will not respond, a check gauge light pops up. It requires that I restart the vehicle. After doing so, Oil Pressure Gauge responds normally, check gauge light turns off.

Meanwhile, my friends have told me my engine is 'louder'. As in it sounds like it's simply running a lot louder than normal. He also said he heard it 'clunk' once (while that Check Gauge Light was on), but I been driving the thing around and listening to it (while Check Gauge Light is off) and havent heard any 'clunking'. It's just noticably louder. I have installed a K&N Air Filter to it, but that has been about a year ago. I don't recall it being so noisy as it has been during the winter months.

Last, in the back of the engine compartment, I hear a soft clacking noise. I have no idea what to make of it, but maybe it will make sense to someone else.

Past that, everything normal. It maintains a normal RPM at Idle, and has no problem with driving. I am going to change the oil out, and replace the Oil Pressure Gauge and see how that goes. But if you guys can identify these problems as something else, or god forbid something major. Please tell me.

Also going to see if I can get the engine to run after work with the check gauge light on and listen/prod it, and see if the engine is acting abnormal while the error is happening. Then I am going to Autozone to find out what errors are happening.

Autozone won't be any help on this. The first thing that needs to be done is to use a mechanical gauge to test the actual oil pressure. You could be doing some serious, permanent internal damage driving this.

This forum set-up is WEIRD. Anyways, I'll have that check too, but my post on an other forum is getting the impression I have a exhaust leak also. So I am going to get both check out. What do you think they would cost me? Thank you.

They think an exhaust leak is making the oil pressure light come on? That's ridiculous.

Oil pressure problems AND a noise when it's warning you is not a good sign. That strongly suggests the warning is real. Don't waste time if not too late now it sure seems like it's going to be!

Did you check the oil level? What weight oil you running in it? How many miles have you gone since your last oil change?

HT has the right idea about screwing in a pressure gauge and checking the oil pressure to rule out either a mechanical problem in the engine or the gauge itself.

You guys are defiantly doom and gloom.

The Exhaust Leak developed recently. I will be getting a mechanic to take a proper look and find the exact source of the leak. And as the system is 7 years old and the entire pipe shows signs of rusting, it was only a matter of time. I will more than likely replace the entire exhaust system as this problem will happen again down the line.

I never said they were related, I said that they are two different problems.

The Oil Pressure Gauge error is a infamous error for TJ Jeep Wranglers and is a notably harmless error (as the sensor works and responds correctly after a vehicle restart) and has been a error that has happened ever since I owned the Jeep. I am getting it checked of course. I will be following your given advice and thank you for it.

An exhaust noise is an exhaust noise and shouldn't change if a warning light is on or not. Is it my eyesight or did you just say it makes a noise or clunking when being warned that goes away when the warning light goes out?

I'm trying to think of why oil pressure would change by simply restarting it and about the only things that comes to mind are sludged out oil or perhaps so low an high viscosity it can't deal with that oil.

None of us have anything to gain or lose with suggestions about a problem that isn't in front of us. Just know if you really lack oil pressure for any reason the potential damage is in seconds not even minutes of running it if it's true. Personally I have a hard time understanding why it can change oil pressure from zero to reading normal with such regularity as restarting it? It's more than plain leaky exhaust problems by all bets,

We are not trying to be doom and gloom, but when you read that an engine is making questionable noises and the oil pressure gauge is showing zero, you tend to think you really could have no oil pressure in the engine.

So talking with my friend, he has told me he never heard any such sound as he described. He admits it was a bad choice of words (a VERY bad choice of words). I guess it popped into his mind as the best (or in my opinion worst) way to explain that the engine was noisier than he remebered. I believe I have it narrowed down to the exhaust system, and as I said I believe the sensor error is unrelated but also a problem that needs to be looked at.

With that said, I will be taking it to a mechanic to take a closer look at the engine, the sensor, and any clogging in the system all while the exhaust system is replaced.

Thank you for your help.

And with a simply engine restart, the sensor turns on without issue and will respond properly.

As of right now, I believe it is falling into line of that infamous TJ Wrangler error. But with that said, I will be getting it looked at for more serious problems, naturally.

Errant gauge that might be common to this is one thing. In conjunction with what is described as no oil pressure is another. It's your Jeep. Why do you even wonder if sludge could be an issue? If you've cared for it, it about can't be the issue,
