Check Engine Light Problem. Sign In

98 Olds Cutlass, 3.1V6. After idling for a while with the heater on, "Check Engine" light comes on. Does not come on unless heater is turned on while idling. Performance seems unaffected and light goes out after driving for awhile with heater turned off. Technician says code means "backfire or misfire", says try higher octane gas, but it doesn't seem to help. ???

A misfire would kick the engine light but the engine light would not go off. My guess is that since it is only with the heater on you may be setting an A/c or cooling fan code. Turn your heater to defrost and listen to see if the A/C compressor clutch is pulling in and out. You will hear it click, the compressor will run for a few seconds, then click again, the compressor will stop. This is called cycling and it is normal operation. Have the computer scanned again at a different shop. Make sure they scan not just the OBDII codes, but also scan the GM codes. There are 4 different class codes. You may have more codes stored in the computer but the OBDII codes are only generic codes. Please post back and let us know what turns up.

I use a diagnostic tool called CarMD. It will pretty much tell you whatever is wrong with your car as long as it is a 1996 or newer. It costs about $90 and it plugs into the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) port. Very easy to use. Heres a link to the site if you want to check it out: http://www.carmd.com/
