I went out to start my car yesterday and it wouldn't start. It don't make any noise at all when I turn the key (other than the whirring sound of the fuel pump which is fine). The battery is fully charged. I'm trying a process of elimination to find out the problem. First I want to check the starter. Where is the starter located for a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L V-8 engine? Also, if you have any other thoughts, suggestions and ideas I'd welcome them all. Thanks in advance. (Note: The starter never gave any indication that it was on it's way out). P.S. Can I cross the cellonoid with a long screwdriver to see if it will start?

What are the dash lights doing when you try to start it? Do they dim right out or do they stay strongly lit?
Turn your headlights on and see what they do when you try to start it also.
The results will give us an idea where to look.

Lights inside stay lit nice and bright, as do the headlights. When I turn the key it just does nothing except for the sound of the fuel pump coming on.

The power leaves the ignition switch on the white with pink wire and then goes to the trans range sensor (neutral safety switch) and leaves there for the starter on the red with Lt blue wire. You are going to have to use a testlight and test these wires for power when the key is held in "start" position to determine where your losing the current.
