Car stalling out after hwy driving once in city no engine codes Sign In

Hi I have been pulling my hair out with this problem with my car. Heres the skinny
95 Lincoln Towncar
4.6L V8 SOHC 16V
140K on milege

So I have what I would consider is an intermittent problem. I dont do a lot of HWY driving but when I do whats happening is after lets say 45 min to an hour on the HWY when I get to the city and come to a stop sign the car will start to stall out and then the engine will die. After turning the car back on after say 20 seconds it will usually start back up and then allow me to drive to the next stop sign before repeating the process. Normally when it restarts and starts driving will have normal RPM's and smooth idle before the stuttering and stalling out. Sometimes I will have to coax it out and gently accelerate until the RPM's come up to normal. This only seems to happen with a warm engine. If I just run around town and drive a couple miles here or there (with plenty of stopping) it doesn't seem to be an issue.

There are no engine fault codes displayed.

I have checked the fuel rails right after the engine stalls out and there appears to be plenty of pressure. Did change the fuel filter about 6 months ago. My guess is its probably a sensor but with no codes not really sure where to start? Mass Airflow? EGR? IAC? Not sure but from the research I have been doing cant really say the symptoms really match up. I also checked the coil packs w/ a test spark plug and all of the cylinders have good spark. Any suggestions?

Things to monitor when problem is occurring:

Fuel pressure (need to connect a fuel pressure gauge)
PCM system voltage
Ignition primary signal
Crankshaft sensor signal

Other things that can cause stalls:
TCC not disengaging
EGR valve sticking open or getting vacuum from solenoid.
IAC system fault

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

fords(lincolns) do have some issues with idle control motors causing stalling when dropping to idle, usually a cheap fix is taking it off and cleaning it with carb cleaner, another cause can be dirty egr valves,a quick test is simply again removal and clean.good luck

Techforfree,

Please pay attention and actually read these threads before posting to them. This poster stated that it does not immediately start back up so that eliminates an IAC.
