Hi everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but it seemed to be a combination transmission/engine issue. Just bought an old truck to restore that is in really good condition considering. The owner passed away and it sat in a garage for a long time. Anyways, if the truck is in park and I go to switch into reverse, the engine immediately shuts off. If I crank the truck without giving it a little gas, it wont start everytime. And lastly, if I do give it gas and crank it, it idles really low and stutters like it wants to shut off. Hammer "1974" unless I'm going blind IAC was probably a college in Iowa! This smacks of choke stuck. Clean it up and make sure it moves freely with carb cleaner - throttle body cleaner is the same. You need to hold throttle part open to see it's full operation and that the "fast idle" screw is able to get to top of step cam. If it was normal when last shut off it would be on regular idle and won't go upstairs if you will without choke closed then it's on "fast" idle for cold start and run. One tap of gas pedal it would come down to next step and finally choke should be fully open and that idle screw and cam are doing nothing anymore. Make sure that choke sets and open when warmed up if you can get it that far just sitting there. There's more. Depending on how long it sat the gas could be an issue. Fuel filter should just screw into front of carb but may be in line and they are small and can't hold much. Toss it a few times after running for some time - cheap part still available. Use no teflon - they seal by threads or clamps. Don't wail it tight if screw in type - just enough not to leak., T

The choke does seem to be sticking some. After warmed up or while throttling it didnt seem to move at all. I will clean it tomorrow and go from there. Hope it works, thanks.

Quick re-read - possibly a two or 4 barrel - the front plate is the choke. It Sticky by hand use care to work it free. I'd even get some PB (Power Blaster) penetrating oil on a Q-Tip if needed to target pivot points and work it back and forth CAREFULLY as broken stuff will be hard to find just that item new. It will free up - as said PB then carb cleaner. Carb cleaner again when it's running holding idle up and let it have it. It's also easy with cleaning it down the throttle body to send a flake of crud that fouls/shorts a plug gap so if it feels like running on 7 cylinders just find the one and knock off the flake. Remember - that thing no doubt used leaded gas as long as they sold it which did or could make some funky orange debris. Not that I remember those days of course as I wasn't born yet! LMAO- ROF! Parts available for this. It would be nice now if it was a 2 barrel as it's a bit simpler. All those rods and things that pivot must be free. Near sure the choke is still heated by a tube that goes to exhaust manifold AND puts the heater hose to the heater clamped to the choke spring as a back up to shut it off. It doesn't need these things to be lubed as that would just attract dirt - clean is enough. Wipe up any puddles if made with a paper towel and not leave them on hot engine intake manifold as it could flash to flames. Stay calm - it will go out if just a little. If too much a fire extinguisher makes it hell to restart - been there done that but be ready. Doesn't matter but is this a Windsor or Cleveland engine? I bet most 351s were Windsors in Trucks but they had tons of choices back then. OE should have had an orange sticker on driver's side valve cover if still there and legible. Good luck. There must be some problem in the gears or the clutch plate.your engine must not be becoming free to shift gear resulting in engine to shut off.Consult a good garage and put focus on the gears and the clutch plate.
