2001 Mitsubishi Lancer GLi, 1.8 L, 191,000 KMs Engine overheating, power steering lost and dead battery. Was driving, noticed weird rattling when accelerating, then car overheated, engine and battery light came on as well as losing power steering. Cruised into parking spot , white smoke coming out. Refilled coolant and oil. Car started again, drove for 10 minutes then occurred once more however this time wouldn’t start again as battery had died. Checked serpentine belt which is running fine, mechanic noted it needed replacing next service. Put another car battery in which work, problem then occurred again. Bit at a loss at to what is wrong with it? Wouldn’t a problem with the serpentine belt be causing all these things to fail!

! Your symptoms are almost exactly a missing belt but said you saw it working properly?? Those warning lights would light up the red ones mean biz you shouldn't have driven it till figured out. If the belt turns but was said needs replacing what are you waiting for? It's such slim chance the "harmonic balancer" (crankshaft pulley) is slipping - would be a personal first for me. I've seen some wobble and hear of them falling off but so would the belt. If (total guess) that belt is so loose might explain this or an oil or coolant making it slip as if not there close enough to really no help. You'd get all those symptoms then too. Loss of PS, battery power only and the lights are too damning that it's somehow not working. Wild guess: It's looks fine until you drive it one hard load on it allows it to quit working like PS, or other something on that belt locks it from working?? Take it off only for a new one right now or next if you tow it somewhere. You just can't allow overheating like that in anything ever. Damage may already be out of control costly NOW. AGAIN, this problem is to do next use of this car no delays AND find out if anything else happened right away, T

It starts fine and engine runs perfectly with no weird sounds or anything of the likes.

None of which would appear with a blown head gasket or cracked head. The white smoke means burning coolant and that is bad news. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
