1986 Ford Tempo, Engine is the 2.3 gas.
We have replaced the power steering pump, altenator, surpentine belt, gas filter, and put new plugs and wires on the car. The car does sound better but every time you turn the steering hard left or right the car dies. Before we changed the surpentine belt it would stop the altenator. This problem only occurs while the car is in park or when you are turning the wheel hard to one direction to back up.

I would have to double check but on a lot of the Fords there is a sensor on the hp p/s hose that raise the idle when the wheel is turned to compensate for the extra load on the engine. If the sensor gets unplugged or goes bad it can cause this problem due to not raising the idle when a larger load is put on the engine.......

You may also want to clean your throttle body. If it gets too dirty, this can limit the range of the IAC motor and you can get the same problems.........

how good is your belt tension? If good I would guess a restriction in the power steering lines or rack, which you can check with a pressure gauge place in line on the pressure side and return side of the system.

I think you are right that was our next guess. How often is when the transmission down shift rod falls off a car? Is it going to be hard to put that back on?
