Car Stalls After Start, and Ticks When Accelerated Sign In

Year: 1995
Make: Mitsubishi
Model: Magna (executive)
Engine: 3L - Multipoint Injection
Mileage: 280,000km

My car has recently started stalling right after startup. Tonight it started fine, and I drove down the road. I found that there was a ticking noise when I accelerated, that went away when I reached a higher speed. I got down to the main road, and turned down it (still ticking on acceleration). I came to a roundabout, slowed down, and the engine died just as I got to it. I popped the hood, and the engine seemed quite hot, with a small amount of oil leaked from the tank, but not enough to start dripping.

I managed to start it up again and rev it up (to avoid stalling) before taking off up the road (still ticking on acceleration) to get into a side-street for a better look. Before I got to the side street, the engine started gushing steam, and I pulled over, popped the hood, and saw there was a small split in one of the main hoses (vaccum hose?) and I could smell something burning. Luckily I was close to a supermarket, and bought some strong tape to temp patch it. It did the trick briefly, but was still ticking on acceleration. I almost got it home before it died again. Each time it stalled, the battery and oil lights both came on.

Ever since I bought the car, the 'check engine' light has briefly come on when starting, then went away. I checked around some forums, and it seemed it wasn't any problem, and I never did have a problem until now. I've booked it in for a mechanic tomorrow morning, though I would like to try and get an idea of what I might be dealing with, before I take it in to have my pants pulled down.

Thanks in advance.

The way you have abused that engine you are probably looking at a new engine. If you continue to treat the new engine like that, you will be soon replacing that one too.
The next time you have a serious injury like a broken bone or deep wound, see if the duct tape thing works any better there.

Well that didn't help me any, but thanks I guess :( I was just trying to get it home, as I wasn't that far away, and didn't want to leave it on the side of the road in our neighbourhood at night.

'If' I don't need a new engine...any constructive ideas on what the problem might be?

My constructive advice is to stop abusing your car. You think there are no consequences to these decisions but there is. Your problems had started long before this day and you chose to simply ignore them and once it got to critical stage you thought that saving a few bucks on a tow truck was more important than doing serious damage to your engine. It's too late for that car now. It's time to pay the price for the decisions you've made and that repair shop is about to deliver the news.

What about the engine could I have ruined? There was only steam coming from one hose, and the car will still run if I try (though I'm not going to now obviously). There is no smoke blowing from anywhere, just steam from the cracked hose. I would still like to get an idea of the problem, even if it is completely useless.

You have repeatedly overheated the engine and ultimately drove it until it got hot enough to shut off, now to the point where you likely have blown a head gasket or maybe even worse. The steam you see is what's left after all the coolant is gone and it only takes a few seconds at that temp to do serious damage to an aluminum engine. That wasn't bad enough but you even tried to drive it even further. I bet you even drove it to the repair shop too.

No, we pushed it up the road, to get home...as we didn't break down the final time far away. I'd only just topped the coolant up this morning before it started fine. There is still plenty of coolant left in the tank, and the oil is just below full. I haven't taken it anywhere since (due for the mechanic in the morning).

Ok I checked the oil tank, and it was empty. When I check it earlier via the dipstick (when we stalled) by wiping it, and dipping it back in, it looked to have plenty. So I'm hoping that I haven't screwed the engine in such a short amount of time. Do you think if I put new oil in it, I could get it to the mechanic, or would you advise not even trying?
