Can't keep car running Sign In

I just recently bought an '87 Plymouth Horizon which I knew had running problems. The dealer said he thought it was bad gas or dirt in the lines. He had just rebuilt the carburator and since that didn't fix it he figured bad gas. The car has only 42,000 original miles and sat for some 10 years. I just changed out a bad smog pump, carb gaskets and carefully checked for any loose hoses or vacuum lines. Found nothing. If I step on the gas when the car is cold is starts every time with a fast idle. eventually the idle kicks down and the car stalls. The only way I can keep the car running is to constantly pump the gas peddle. Not sure what to do next???

If the gas is 10 years old then the tank should be drained whether this is the problem or not...

If the car runs good cold & off idle then it's probably isn't bad gas.......

If this is just an idle problem, you are probably looking at either too much fuel or too much air....... I would hook up a vacuum gauge & take an idle reading. Make sure there isn't any black smoke out the back while it's idling.

While it's trying to idle I'd cover the carb, if that helps it, you have a vacuum. If not I'd pull a good sized vacuum line & give it a vacuum leak, if that helps it idle you're getting too much fuel...............
