Can't Start 1992 Ford Ranger sitting for a couple years

Can't Start 1992 Ford Ranger sitting for a couple years Sign In

I have a 1992 Ford Ranger 4 Cylender 2.3L it's been sitting for a couple years and I had to replace the fuel pump along with gas oil fuel filter etc. but when I crank it there is a loud noise coming for the engine and it won't stop while the engine is running unless you take of the drive belt off or it burn the starter I have burned 3 starters it will crank one time grind for a little bit then completely destroy the starter can anyone help

I've run into this a few times, over the years. If the battery is too weak, it won't pull the gear back out of the flywheel when the engine starts. So, have the battery checked and the connections. The other thing that comes to mind, if the flywheel/flexplate is damaged, the drive gear on the starter could be getting hung up, and staying engaged. Hope this helps.

I don't get what the drive belt had to do with any of this.
