Can I disconnect SMOG / AIR Pump? Sign In

I just found that the AIR / SMOG pump on my 2005 Chevy Trailblazer is bad. It Makes an awful noise when starting the car. Is it ok / Safe to just disconnect it? I have been reading allot online and it appears that the SMOG pump is not really needed for newer vehicles. The cost for a replacement is around $250.. trying to save some $!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Of course it's needed. They didn't put it there so the car would cost more. You will have check engine lights all over the place without it and if you have an inspection you will fail it.

No inspections in my state. Its my understanding the AIR pump just blows air to the exhaust. I have see more often then not that people have just disconnected it with no problems.

That depends on what you consider a problem. They serve a purpose and are put there for good reason. The PCM monitors it and will definitely start flagging when it sees it missing. It also reduces emissions and lowers combustion temperatures, not to mention that it is against Federal law to disable it.

alaskanspear: It needs it. If one was on a separate belt and about to fall off and wreck another belt or part to save your life to get to a destination some you could cut belt and fix when possible. The vehicle long before MY 2005 it's built into the operation and legal or not would cost more later than to fix it,

It's not belt driven. It's electric and mounted to the frame under the driver's seat.

OK - One of those. It would still set the stage for engine controls to make wrong/misinformed adjustments and be a net loss IMO. Results sensed in exhaust are part of proof that all is well = efficiency as well as lower emissions. Repairing it would pay for itself,
