Camshaft play .. and skipped when trying to torque it

1997 Subaru Legacy 2.2l 100k miles I'm doing my timing belt right now... i have two issues, both rather alarming to me.. 1) I noticed that there is forward backward play in my RH camshaft, it is very significant, probably .200". There is a camshaft support cap on the rear RH side that acts as a thrust bearing, i thought perhaps the bearing was worn so i took one from my other car (1996 Legacy) and put it on. The other car has no play whatsoever. Changing that thrust bearing made no difference. 2) I didn't know what to do about the play, but i had been driving the car around prior to this and didn't notice any issues so i just wanted to get the timing belt back on and see if it would run okay even with the camshaft play. I tried to torque it down (crank was held in position at the drive plate) to 60 ft-lb and the camshaft skipped.. I didn't realize what it was at first so I tried to torque down a bit more and it skipped about 5 teeth i would guess. The 97 2.2L is an intereference motor. So i have two questions: is the head damaged and what would cause the play in the camshaft? Oh, i should also mention when i had the belt off i had to rotate the crank a little bit to get the prybar out of the drive plate.. probably about 15 degrees. I rotated it back to TDC after that, so i don't know if that could have contributed to any of this..

Get the belt back on, correctly, with the timing marks realigned, then a compression test should answer your question. There is a tool that holds the cam gears in place while installing the belt. Loren SW Washington

Okay, i will do that. Can you tell me about the camshaft play? I have about .5-.7mm of front back play in the camshaft. I've tried a new thrust bearing already, no difference. Is it going to be a problem for me to drive around like this for awhile? And if not the thrust bearing, what else could cause that?

These are the specs that I'm seeing for the camshaft; Standard end play: .30mm-.260mm Service Limit: .350mm Hope that helps. Loren SW Washington
