I hoping somebody can give my some direction regarding a problem I'm having. I have a 6 cylinder 2000 Dodge Dakota with 67,000. My problem is that it sounds like the bearing is going out on the AC Unit. I don't want to put a lot of money into fixing this problem and I just want to by-pass the AC Unit. My question is, can I simply purchase a shorter fan belt and by-pass the AC unit or do I have to remove the unit and install a by-pass pulley. I went to an auto parts store yesterday and they said they don't make another belt that would enable me to by-pass the unit. Under the hood of my truck is a picture of how to route the pulley. One shows with AC and one shows without AC.
Can I simply purchase another belt and by-pass the AC Unit with out removing the AC Unit?
Any assistance anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

It appears that on this particular engine that you can use a shorter belt and remove the compressor.
It sounds like you just need a parts store with someone that knows what they are talking about.
The Goodyear part number for the belt you need is #4070884

No, the compressor will be in the way. It has to be removed. I really don't recommend going that route. The system will get so contaminated it will be very difficult to fix at a later date.

Hammer Time, thanks again for your advise. I really don't want to go inside the AC Unit and try to fix the bearing, so I think my best bet is to have the bearing fixed by a professional.
You guys have helped me out a lot with several problems I've had in the passed. Thanks again for all your insightful input.

No, you don't take those things apart. Your looking at a new compressor there.

I'm not sure of your expertise level but you may consider changing out the clutch....
It's one of those middle of the road repairs. Not the easiest thing to do but definitely not the hardest thing to do either.
Just a couple good pairs of snap ring pliers, the right pry bars & some patience. You don't even have to evac the system, you can do it right on the vehicle...

I don't think we have we confirmed whether this is a bad pulley bearing or a bad front compressor bearing?

True, I just assumed it was a bad clutch bearing. Those give you problems all the time.
If the compressor bearing was bad it would just give him trouble when using the a/c. He would just have to disable the comp & be good....

I think I'd still be pretty hesitant to put a couple hundred dollar clutch into a compressor that isn't worth much more and may go soon after.
