Broken Crank sensor zx2

Broken Crank sensor zx2 Sign In
I have a 2000 Ford ZX2 which recently stopped running, the computer said the crank sensor was bad so we replaced it and found that it was broken off and had pieces of metal shavings stuck to the magnetic screw that held it in place, any idea what could cause this? What could be rubbing against it?
