Bad gas. What to do?

Hey folks. First time post here. I drive a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8. Today I did soemthing stupid. I was really low on gas and had a can of gas in the garage from last winter that I hadn't used yet. Stupidly rather than risk running out of gas on my way into town, I used about 1 3/4 gallons of this gas. Well on the way to town my jeep starts acting funny and the check engine light comes on. I immediately thought that maybe I was running out of gas, so I booked it to my clsest gas statin and put in about 8 more gallons of gas. Thinking I had solved the problem I started my car and begin to driv home with no problems (about 6 miles). But on the way home it starts acting up again. The RPM' are jumping around and the jeep is shaking. I immediately parked it at a parking lot and called a buddy to come get me, but I'm really worried. I got home and looked in the gas can and there was a little bit of dirt in it. Am I screwed? What should I do? Thanks.

Is there still gas in the can you used to pour into clean glass jar and really look at it? If so do so.
Gas is a problem when older but just last Winter isn't that bad by itself. Your fuel filter should screen out bits of dirt. I'd just replace that now anyway.
Get a code reading as with light on it has info for you.
The gas is probably not the problem by itself. You might add a little fuel treatment - I choose Chevron's Techron as a fav. It's more likely that it's something else and with fuel issues as the trigger suspect fuel pump pressure.
Perhaps just my experience but low fuel levels and folks who routinely run lower seem to go thru more fuel pumps as I'm convinced the fuel helps moderate operating temp of
the pumps and prolong their life,
