1990, GMC, 1500, 4.3L, 150,148 miles. I changed plugs & wires and it ran fine at first. When it started to run rough I found one of the wires had burned through on the manifold. I put on one of the old wires, started the truck and it ran fine. The next day wife went to start it and it wouldn't start, gave it some gas it backfired thru the intake, smoke came out from under the hood. When I got home I got it to run, but it don't run right. Crank it till it almost starts then give it some gas and it will usually start. Still will backfire thru the intake while cranking and shoot fire out. May stall at any time when I let off the gas.

Double check all your wires one at a time in the firing order. Sounds like one of them got crossed.
