BLOWN ENGINE Sign In

So, I was headed to the Gulf of Mexico down I-65; right at the 17th mile marker just before entering Alabama, the engine in my 2001 Toyota Corolla started vibrating and making sputtering noises. Seconds later these peculiarities were followed by a loud thud and a jerk and then the engine quit. All power provided to the vehicle was dead including power steering and power brakes which was interesting at best going 80 to 90 mph down the highway because there's a bit of curvature to the road in the mountains. I coasted to a halt right around the 14th mile marker and had the thing towed into a mechanic. Apparently my oil ring failed and completely took the engine for all its worth. It was completely destroyed and not even worth rebuilding. He said the rings were on top of the piston heads when he looked at it and he was surprised that it didn't crack something or have something blow through the wall of the something or another or whatever. Was this just a fluke occurrence or are there preventative measures I should be taking to avoid future problems. Will going over the usual 3,000 mile rule for an oil change cause this? By the way the car and the engine only had 54,000 miles on it when it fell apart. The cost for a used motor with 53,000 miles on it along with replacing a few other things and installation was around $2,100. The hotel costs and car rental along with everything else put the total bill just under $3,000. I'm just curious how my $300 trip to visit family somehow added an extra zero at the end of my budget.

Thanks

Re: BLOWN ENGINE Sign In

How often have you been changing the oil?
Has it been consuming any oil?
When did you check the oil level last?

Re: BLOWN ENGINE Sign In

Was oil low, because if not you would have to be great amounts past 3000 miles on oil I have never heard of a car blowing with that low miles and full on oil maybe faulty rings
