Alero 2.4 trouble Sign In

I have an '01 Alero, 2.5, 5 speed. Engine starts right up, idles fine, but you when you attempt to drive the trouble starts... The engine can't rev passed 2,700 rpm's or so, and then it cuts out and sputters and drops back to 1500 rpm and will rev up to 300 and as soon as it hits 3k, dips to 1500.. i have no power and can't get the car above 35 mph at best.. can't get up hills, nothing. i pulled the whole intake side off the engine and everything seems to be in order there.. I heard that the pcm's tend to fail a lot or go berserk. I'm looking for a way to test the pcm at home, or reset it. Or some other ideas as to whet the problem may be? some things to check? it was running perfect, drove it about 50 miles, and then, while driving, started to lose power.. i could only get it up to 50-55, then only 40, and once the engine gets hot, only about 20-25 mph.
was also thinking maybe it jumped time.. but i'd really like to hope that's not the case..

I would first test the fuel pressure using an accurate gauge.

i found a torn vacuum line on the intake side.. could that be the problem? it would be nice to find out it's a $2 line as opposed to a pain in the ass timing chain job.

If you have the $50K for the fine, go ahead and cut it off.

O K, humor me for a minute. Before you go cuttin stuff off for a trial & error situation, (there are tess to check convertor specs), when engine is running, in a clear area of the intake, push down on the intake and note engine speed. If it increases, may be a bad intake.

Re: Alero 2.4 trouble Sign In

i'm not concerned about the fine.. if i cut it off, i'm going to slap a new one on tonight. i'm not stupid enough to go driving around that way. and what do you mean push down on the intake? i pulled the whole intake side off, less the throttle body, and nothing changed.

Re: Alero 2.4 trouble Sign In

and online it says the fine is $2500, not $50,000. and the emissions parts on the vehicle are far passed their five year warranties, so legally, i can cut it off and eat the thing if i want to, i just can't drive without it.

Re: Alero 2.4 trouble Sign In

Sure you can. you just have to put it back the way it was and depending who you are, the tampering fine can go a whole lot higher than $50K if you decide to modify it.

OK, stay on the fine thing if you want, I'm saying the intake on these go bad. If you can clear your mind, while it runs, find a clear spot where you won't hurt yourself, and push on the intake manifold- downward-if the rpm increases, MIGHT be a problem! Understand?

cut the cat, fired it up, and it redlines with ease. I'll check out the intake to be sure, but i think for now it's alright.

Been at a gm store for 5 years and i've NEVER seen any problems related to the intake. Have you checked the press regulator? Is the ect reading normally?

FYI you can just remove the upstream O2 sensor to check for plugged cat you dont have to cut the old one off.

I've never been at a GM store- found 2 of these in Arkansas, far from the wandering crowd. I guess no one can see them all!
