My check engine light came on and my 1991 Ford Taurus lacks drive power, the car rides find until I try to excel above 25mph and then the cars stalls, when this happens I let up off of the gas petal and then tap it lightly in order to get my the car to accelerate. Any solutions or repair ideas? 1991 Ford Taurus 140,000 Miles 4 Door Sedan

I know they have problems with contamination of mass airflow sensor(MAF).. as well as corrosion in the connector at MAF sensor. That might be your problem quick easy check.

When you mention 'the car stalls' do you mean the engine dies, or just won't accelerate? Have the code(s) retrieved and post them. If it comes back with a lean condition, you may want to have the fuel filter checked/replaced. If it just plain won't accelerate past 25mph, you may have a restricted exhaust. Let us know. Good morning Loren, the engine doesn't die, it just won't accelarate, I had a mechanic check out this problem and the only error code that appear was a transmission error code, the transmission fluid was checked and the fluid was not corroded or execessively dirty. For some reason, I really don't think this is a transmission problem, the gears operate fine and the car does not slide forward or backward when switching gears. Any suggestions?

Good morining Zname, the past (2) mechanics seem to think this is a transmission problem, is this a symptom of the beginning stages of severe transmission problems?

Good afternoon zmame, I called the mechanic and he stated that he did not record nor remembered the Transmission error. I really don't feel that this is a transmission problem. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Since this is OBD I, you can check the codes yourself by counting the flashes of the check engine light. Click here. After you get the codes, scroll down the page and it will have a link to tell you the code definitions. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
